I was driving down the road the other day and saw a bill board with that simple word on it.  Was it promoting faith?  Self-confidence? A new movie or book?  No.  It was promoting the Power Ball Lottery which starts here sometime in April.

The Lottery.  Believe what?  That you will win?  Well, that does take a step of faith.  No, more than a step; a GIANT leap of faith.  Why?  The odds of winning the Power Ball Lottery are  – get this – 1 in 175,223,510.  Sure, there are winners – but having the winning numbers is a long, long, long…there can’t be enough longs –  shot.

But, I got to thinking.  If you are going to believe in something, believe you can beat Diabetes.  You really can.  You can win your War On Diabetes.  And the odds are really in YOUR favor.  (I know you were wondering how I was going to transition from a bill board advertising the lottery to the War On Diabetes…ta daaaa!)

The path to controlling Diabetes, or reversing Prediabetes, is well known.  In the case of Prediabetes eating a lower carb diet and doing a bit of exercise – about 30 minutes a day – can very well reverse the condition or postpone the onset of Diabetes.  If you have Diabetes, then you need to add meds to your prescription for success.  Diet. Exercise. Meds.  That is all it takes.  And, belief that you can do it.  Heck, you don’t even have to start with belief – it will come as your glucose readings come down.

Nothing influences belief like success.  And, success in controlling the disease, or reversing Prediabetes is inevitable if you follow that well worn path of – say it with me – Diet, Exercise and Meds.

So, what is success for one who has Diabetes?  Well, according to our friends at the American Diabetes Association, it means an A1c of less than 7.0.  And, how do you know if you have reversed Prediabetes?  The easiest way to know is if your doctor tells you so.  Generally it will mean that you have an A1c of less than 6.0.  It will also mean that you have probably lost a bit of weight – losing just 7% of your body weight can make a huge difference; and you are feeling better than you have in years.  Wouldn’t that be great!

Does Prediabetes always lead to Diabetes?  No.  Does it sometimes?  Yes.  So, why should you put any effort into fighting it?  Because at the very least you will postpone the onset of Diabetes; and you have a more than even chance of reversing it.  Let’s see, winning the Power Ball Lottery is 1 in 175,223,510; reversing Prediabetes (if you work to fight it) better than 50/50.  Heck, who wouldn’t take that bet?  Read this article from NBC news – it’s really interesting and informative.

I believe you can fight your War On Diabetes (or Prediabetes) and win!  All you have to do is to put one foot in front of the other and start down the path.  One foot.  One foot.  One foot.  You can do it.  Soon, you will believe, too.

When belief meets action, success is inevitable.

As always, thank you for reading.
