I write so much about winning the War on Diabetes – about being victorious – telling you that you can do it – it occurred to me that I have not written much about those who are doing it. Sure, I write about my little adventures, but I am not alone – and neither are you. There are folks who have beaten back Prediabetes and who are controlling their Diabetes.
Just a reminder: Prediabetes is just that – Pre. It’s a condition that if not dealt with will lead to Diabetes as sure as night follows day. If you are diagnosed with Prediabetes, and don’t change your diet a bit and start exercising, you will get Diabetes. And, once you get Diabetes – you are a Diabetic for the rest of your life. It might be controlled, and your numbers might be great due to Diet, Exercise and Meds, but you are still a Diabetic. That does not change.
So, can Prediabetes really be beat? Just ask the All Season’s Cyclist. He was diagnosed with Prediabetes several years ago and decided he did not want Diabetes – a very smart move! He had to lose weight, change his diet, and start exercising. Did you see that? Diet and Exercise. He chose to ride a bike – year round in Northeast Illinois near the shores of Lake Michigan! That’s dedication. The winters are cold and snowy. But did that deter him? No – he was battling for a normal – non-Diabetes – life. And, he won. He reversed the Prediabetes and has a very lively blog for those who are active in extreme cycling. He won his War On Diabetes.
Ask Kathy about controlling Diabetes. She has a great blog at What Do You Mean I Can’t Eat Red Vines? She’s a Mom, Wife, has a career, writes book reviews for a blog and maintains her own blog about Diabetes. Kathy has had problems with her meter – it reads way too high. But, she did what she is supposed to do. Diet, Exercise and Meds. Just those three things and she has her Diabetes under control. It’s not easy. She had to learn a new way of eating and has learned to resist all of the things she liked – cookies, pies, chips, etc. But you know what? It worked and she is winning her War On Diabetes! You can read about it in her own words here – it’s exciting!
And, then there is Shell from Australia. Diabetes is world-wide with about 366,000,000 people having the disease. Shell is one of about 3,300,000 Australians with Diabetes. As soon as she was diagnosed, she began to take control. She’s lost weight. Changed her diet – what she eats. She started exercising. And, she takes her meds. You saw that, right? Diet. Exercise. Meds. It’s exciting to learn the same steps work all over the world. Shell is winning her War On Diabetes – and doing it with grace and candor. Read one of her recent postings.
Folks, you can win. You can reverse or postpone Diabetes if you are diagnosed with Prediabetes. And, if you are told you have Diabetes – control it. You can do it and be so much better because you do. You can win your War On Diabetes.
Many of you already know that I have lost about 60 pounds since diagnosis and I had an A1c of 12.9 or 13.0 – I don’t remember which it was. I just know it was scary high and my doctor was in a hurry to get it down. I did the three things I write about: Diet, Exercise and Meds. For the last two years my A1c has ranged between 5.9 – 6.1. I am healthier and feel better than I have in the last 25 years. The same thing can happen to you.
Others have won their War On Diabetes; you can, too.
As always, thank you for reading.
