Where do Type 2 Diabetics come from?  They come from those with Prediabetes.  The truth of the matter is that while there are 78,000,000 people in the United States with Prediabetes, a lot of them don’t even know it – and that is criminal in my mind when it is so easy to find out.

Yeah – it’s very easy.

The A1c test is not just for Diabetics.  It’s really for everyone.  Early detection of Prediabetes will allow you to either reverse the condition or postpone full-blown Diabetes.

So, how do you find out if you have Prediabetes, or not?  You take an A1c test.  Everyone should have an A1c test at least every two years and then after age 45, or so, every year.

What does the A1c test measure?  It’s a measure of the amount of sugar in your blood during the last 60 to 90 days.  Instead of me trying to explain the science behind the A1c test, take a look at this video:

I know I have written about the need for A1c tests before, but now they are easier than ever to get.  You don’t even have to go to your doctor’s office, if you just want to know what your A1c level is!  You can easily take them at home and have results very quickly.  But – and here is the caution – a test taken in a doctor’s office or at a lab is more accurate than any taken at home.  For those of us who are diabetics, the home A1c tests should not replace the lab test unless you and your doctor have discussed it.

I have recently been researching Home A1c tests for myself just because I want to know where I am more often than every six months.  The was another reason.  Because there are just way too many folks with Prediabetes and they don’t even know they have it.  If you know soon enough, you can either reverse the condition, or postpone the onset of Diabetes.

Bayer makes an at home A1c testing kit.  Take a bit of blood.  Mix it with a provided solution and in about five minutes you get your A1c level.  It costs about $30 for two tests.  Pretty simple.  Very fast.  And, best of all, here’s a coupon for $7.00.

The other major at home A1c test is from Walmart.  It’s a test in which you put a couple drops of blood on a piece of paper and mail it in.  About a week later you get your results.  It works for a lot of folks and is reasonably priced at less than $10.00 for one test.  Take a look at it.

So, get your A1c tested.  At the doctor’s office.  In a lab.  At home.  Just get it done.

As always, thank you for reading.

I am not a doctor or health professional. I am just a guy who is working everyday to control Type 2 Diabetes. My goal is to offer hope, help and solutions for day-to-day living for the diabetic. The disease can be controlled. It can be managed. And, you can do it!

I love A1c tests. I think that they should be part of the yearly physical bloodwork. With such little blood required, why not just include it with the basic metabolic panel? So many lives could be affected.
