‘Tis the Season for … thought I was going to make some reference to the holidays, didn’t you? Well, I am, but only in that they cause stress which raises glucose in your blood (which means higher readings).
But, there’s another ‘reason for the season’ – getting sick. Anything from a cold to pneumonia to hospitalization can raise your glucose levels. Illness causes the body stress. Stress causes the body to put more glucose into the blood. Why? Well, it goes back to the old fight or flight reaction. Whichever you do, you need energy. And, where does the body get energy?
If you, like so many, get a cold during the Holiday season, you could well see your glucose go up. Seasonal Stress. Winter cold. If you are ‘lucky’ enough to have both, know that seeing an increase in glucose readings would be normal. If you are concerned about it, or it goes to a high number for you, contact your doctor for guidance.
After all, it’s the Season! I did not want you to be surprised if you saw higher readings.
As always, thank you for reading.
