Stop the Madness – Please?

More children are obese today than there were 30 years ago.  That’s just a fact.  And, I know a lot of folks have a lot of reasons why this has happened.  Today, at this moment, I am not that interested in the why.  But, I do want to pose a question:

If there are more children who are obese, and since there is a correlation between weight and Diabetes, doesn’t it follow that there will be more and more diabetics over the next 30 years?  It has to stop for their sake and for the sake of their children.  We have to take a stand and begin to reduce the number of children who are obese.

Fortunately, there are some folks who are doing just that.

First, some good news: The number of obese children in several states is lower.  I really got excited when I read this article in USA Today.  It’s a start and shows that the trend can be reversed.  There is hope.

And, more good news about basic running programs for children, and the positive effect it’s having on their confidence and health.  Again, the article is in USA Today.  This is great news.

As you fight Diabetes you can be a role model for children.  Smart eating and bit of exercise can make a huge difference.  For you it means controlling Diabetes.  For children it might well mean never having to fight Diabetes.

And, wouldn’t that be a great gift and legacy?

I know I will write more about childhood Type 2 Diabetes in the future.  You just need to know that as you are fighting and controlling your Diabetes, you are having a positive impact on those around you.

As always, thank you for reading.

Terrific post! I know that I am going to be doing my best to model healthy eating for my kids from now on. Great habits start early!

  2. Thanks for a great post and the links to the other articles. You are exactly right, if healthy habits can be set in childhood, those children are much more likely to be healthy adults. Children model what they see. When they see adults eating well and exercising, they want to do the same.
